Bonding and Pairing up Chinchillas.
Place your new chinchillas cage next to your other chinchilla, so they can see each other, and smell each
other.
DO NOT HAVE CAGES TOUCHING!!!! (They may bit each others hands and fingers)
Place cages 2 inches or more apart. (also be careful of their whiskers)
After a week or two, and you want to make steps to bond them. Take both chinchillas in to a room that
neither of them have played in before. (a Neutral room) And let them down for play time.
- Some times they can completely ignore each other.
- Some times they will smell each other and make a peeping sound.
- Some times the chinchillas may jump on each other to show dominance.
- Some times they could even pull tuffs of hair out of each other or fight.
I separate when they do this, or if they argue badly. And then I try again the next day. *If at any time during
this play time with them together you feel they need separated, Do not wait to separate if you think you
should.
Do not leave the chinchillas alone at all!!! Always supervise.
A car ride,
Many people have used this, successfully.
Taking 2 carriers with you. (one in case you need to separate them)
But putting both chinchillas in the same carrier, and taking a drive, for half an hour or longer. The car ride
most of the time seems to put them to sleep and then they can cuttle with each other. Be sure to always
remember never get your chinchilla to hot because of heat stroke.
Putting them in the same cage. Supervision is extremely important!!!
Preferably put them in a Neutral cage (neither of them have been in) or if you are going to use a cage that
one of them has been in, wash it, and put fresh bedding in it. And only after, you have success, with play time
and or the car ride. Then I would consider moving to this step.
You must supervise so you can separate them if they decide to argue.
Now if they are getting along great, I still do not trust them together. I take them out and do it all over again,
longer the next day, and then another day. Until I feel they are ready to be together. (example: the first day, 3
hours getting along great, following day 6 hours, next day, 8 hours, all with supervision just to be safe)
******These are my opinion and learnings they are not to be used in every situation for every chinchilla. I
wrote about this for everyone to read and learn. -Becky
